Possessing a pleasant subtropical climate and splendid beaches, the Bahamas are one of the most popular year-round resorts in the Western Hemisphere, visited in 2004 by 1.56 million tourists. Tourism plays a central role in the country’s economy and has helped make the Bahamas one of the wealthiest countries in the Caribbean region. Tourism has a downside, however. The huge numbers of visitors damage the island nation's environment. The islands' famous coral reefs, for example, are threatened by increased scuba diving and sport fishing. Merely brushing up against a bit of coral can kill it.
Because of favorable tax laws and secrecy for depositors, the Bahamas have also become an international banking center. Industrial activity is limited; it includes the transshipment and refining of petroleum and the production of steel pipe, pharmaceuticals, salt, rum, and shellfish. The unit of currency is the Bahamian dollar (1 Bahamian dollar equals U.S.$1; 2004).
Self-contained residence, situated with other similar units in a larger building.
The modern large apartment building emerged in the early 20th century with the incorporation of elevators, central heating, and other conveniences that could be shared in common by a building's tenants. Apartments for the well-to-do began to offer other amenities such as leisure facilities, delivery and laundry services, and communal dining rooms and gardens. The multistory apartment house continued to grow in importance as crowding and rising land values in cities made one-family homes less and less practicable in parts of many cities. Much government-subsidized, or public, housing has taken the form of apartment buildings, particularly for the urban elderly and working classes or those living in poverty. Apartment-block towers also were erected in large numbers in the Soviet Union and other countries where housing construction was the responsibility of the state.
A G-string or thong is a narrow piece of cloth or
leather, or plastic that passes between the buttocks and is attached to
a band around the hips, worn as a swimwear or underwear by both men and
women. The two terms, g-string and thong are often used interchangeably
however, the primary difference between the two garments is that a
g-string has less material around the waist band and between the
buttocks hence, a string-like appearance.
The G-string or thong is probably the earliest form of clothing known to
mankind; having originated in the warmer climates of sub-Saharan Africa
where clothing was first worn nearly 75,000 years ago. Many tribal
peoples, such as some of the Khoisan people of southern Africa, wore
thongs for many centuries. Much like the 2000-plus-year-old Japanese
fundoshi, these early garments were made with the male genitalia in
mind.
Although developed for the male anatomy by primitive peoples, in the
modern West thongs are more often worn by females. They first gained
mainstream popularity as swimwear in South America, particularly in
Brazil in the 1970s. In Brazil, where the buttocks ("bunda" in
Portuguese) are especially admired and emphasized; it was originally a
style of swimsuit whose rear area became so narrow that it would
disappear between the wearer's buttocks.
The origin of the term "G-string" is obscure. The term is first attested
in writings by Americans in the late 1800's regarding the loincloth of
Philippine natives. Others attest it to being the g-string on an
instrument. The origin of the word "thong" is from the Old English
thwong, a flexible leather cord
